Mongolia, renowned for its vast steppes and rich nomadic heritage, is embracing its "Digital Nation" long-term goal to enhance digital services and accessibility. As part of this transformation, the country now offers international visitors a streamlined eVisa system.

This guide provides essential details for travellers, including visa requirements, application procedures, and important updates for 2025.

Visa Requirements

Travellers who are not citizens of countries with a visa exemption agreement with Mongolia must obtain a visa prior to entry. The eVisa system facilitates online applications for eligible nationals, removing the need to visit a Mongolian diplomatic mission.

Eligible purposes for an eVisa include tourism, transit, and participation in cultural or sporting events. A complete list of countries eligible to apply for an eVisa can be found on the official Immigration Agency of Mongolia website.

Temporary Visa Exemption (2023–2025)

Under the “Years to Visit Mongolia” programme, the Government of Mongolia has temporarily exempted citizens of 34 countries from visa requirements for tourism purposes.

  • This exemption permits a stay of up to 30 days without a visa.
  • It is in effect from 4 January 2023 to 31 December 2025.
  • It applies to nationals from 32 European countries, Australia, and New Zealand.

For a full list of visa-exempt countries and conditions, travellers are advised to consult the Immigration Agency’s official announcement.

How to Apply for an eVisa

Applications must be completed online via the official eVisa portal: evisa.mn. The process is as follows:

  1. Complete the Application Form: Provide accurate personal, passport, and travel details.
  2. Pay the Application Fee: Fees can be paid securely online.
  3. Receive the eVisa: Once approved, the eVisa will be sent electronically, typically within three (3) working days.

Applicants will be issued an Application ID upon submission and payment, enabling them to monitor the status of their application online here.

Required Documents

Before applying, ensure you have the following documents prepared:

  1. A passport valid for at least 180 days beyond the intended arrival date.
  2. A recent passport-sized photograph (3.5 cm x 4.5 cm).
  3. Additional supporting documents (if required), such as invitations for events or travel itineraries.

Visa Types and Fees

Mongolia’s eVisa offers different categories based on the purpose of travel:

  • Tourism Visa (K2): Single entry, 30-day stay, valid for 150 days.
  • Transit Visa (K6): Single entry, 10-day stay, valid for 150 days.
  • Cultural/Sports Event Visa (K4): Single entry, 30-day stay, valid for 150 days.

Visa fees vary depending on nationality and visa type but generally range from USD 2.75 to USD 51.50.
Please note that visa fees are non-refundable in all cases.

Important Travel Considerations

  • Carry Documentation: Travellers must carry a printed copy of their eVisa and the passport used during the application process when entering Mongolia.
  • Border Entry Requirements: Biometric data collection may be required at the port of entry.
  • Registration: Foreign nationals staying in Mongolia for longer than 30 days must register with the Immigration Agency of Mongolia within seven (7) days of arrival.

Failure to comply with immigration requirements may result in fines or restrictions on future travel to Mongolia.
